Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the squad's ten-game winless start to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have historic links to the team - are among the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the club board as they start the process of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is additionally emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work meaning Wolves would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
