Thomas Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Home Fan Atmosphere Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel shared his regret that the Three Lions team did not get stronger backing from the Wembley crowd during their impressive triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was happy to see his squad continue their strong performance, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the initial stages deciding the match. Yet, he was not content with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” the coach remarked. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We couldn’t score the additional goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get support back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the squad warranted better encouragement today.”
“I support my words. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a little more support in phases where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to recharge, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Away from risking a fight with fans, the manager also caused a stir by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. Yet the move was justified by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and getting his maiden goal for his country.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who face Belgium in a important qualifying match on Monday, learn from their awful first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this game,” the manager commented. “I need to see our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? Today gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Watkins was substituted at half-time after hitting a goalpost and is a concern when England play their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
