Three Lions Coach Explains His Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
A decade ago, Barry featured at a lower division club. Now, he is focused supporting the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines began as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his destiny.
Rapid Rise
Barry's progression is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak in his words.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Dedication, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their methods include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language such as "break".
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. We must not just to keep up with developments and to lead and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To develop a process for effective use in that window, it's crucial to employ all the time available after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections with them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the work ethic. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”
Drive for Growth
The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. For self-improvement, he went into difficult settings imaginable to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants but not Barry.
The next manager at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to rejoin him. English football's governing body see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
